Helping more pupils thrive using open data
Our special workshop with Tom Shirley demonstrates real-life examples of education organisations using open data sets to help find areas with high need, reach out to schools where pupils need more support, and evaluate outcomes compared to national averages.
Tom also kindly recorded an extra case study which we ran out of time for, ‘Evaluating outcomes for specific groups’, which looks in more detail at how to combine outcomes data with demographic data.

Tom has been supporting schools and youth organisations since 2013 to use data to improve services for young people. He is the founder of Illustrating Impact, who have run dozens of projects using school and open data. His most recent project is ‘Beyond the Classroom’ - which helps schools and charities to better understand local communities and track their local partnerships. You can also check out his latest work about education data, including interactive tools and updates about new data sets.
Thank you to the Insight Infrastructure programme for their support. Developed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, it aims to democratise access to high-quality quantitative and qualitative data and evidence through open collaboration and innovation, to help tackle injustice and inequality in the UK.
